Newcastle United have secured their first major purchase of the summer in Sandro Tonali. The ambitious Premier League club is reportedly paying 64 million euros for the midfielder, making him the most expensive Italian player ever.
Tonali succeeds Jorginho, who was known for five years as the most expensive Italian ever. Chelsea paid 57 million euros for the midfielder in 2018.
The 23-year-old Tonali has played for Milan since mid-2020, which rented the midfielder from Brescia for the first year. The fourteen-time international played 130 games in Milan’s service, in which he produced seven goals and thirteen assists. In 2022 Tonali won the national title with ‘I Rossoneri’.
Only once did Newcastle pay more for a player and that was a year ago with the transfer of Alexander Isak. The former striker of Willem II moved from Real Sociedad to St. James’ Park for approximately 70 million euros.
Tonali is also just not the most expensive outgoing transfer from AC Milan. Kaká still holds the record with his €67 million transfer to Real Madrid in 2009.

‘I want to repay the trust’
Newcastle finished fourth in the Premier League last year and will play in the Champions League for the first time since the 2002/2003 season. The club hopes to do well in both competitions with Tonali in the ranks.
The Italian international signed a contract with ‘The Magpies’ on Monday until mid-2028. “I want to thank Newcastle for giving me this wonderful opportunity,” Tonali said when announcing the transfer. “I want to repay that confidence on the pitch.”
AC Milan thanks Tonali for the “beautiful journey”. “We had a great time,” writes the Italian top club on social media.
