Newcastle upon Tyne –
Newcastle United released a related statement Sandro Tonali, who was involved in football betting. The Magpies will support the player through the legal process.
“Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is being investigated by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in connection with illegal betting activities,” wrote Newcastle’s statement on its official website.
“Sandro is fully involved in the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities. He and his family will continue to have the full support of the club.”
“Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to provide any further comment at this time,” explained the statement Newcastle United.
Sandro Tonali previously admitted his actions during the FIGC Prosecutor’s trial, Tuesday (17/10) local time. The Italian player bet on his former club, AC Milan.
The gambling was carried out when Tonali was still an AC Milan player, with the condition of playing or not playing. Now, the 23 year old footballer has had the status of a Newcastle United player since moving last July.
According to the FIFA Code of Ethics Article 26, players who gamble on football can be subject to heavy sanctions. The punishment is a minimum fine of 100 thousand Swiss francs and a ban on football activities for a maximum of three years.
Even so, there is a chance that Tonali will get a reduced sentence. This could happen because the player who defended Brescia helped the investigation, also because he admitted his mistake.
Tonali is one of the Italian players who was revealed to be playing soccer gambling. The other two are Juventus player, Nicolo Fagioli, and Aston Villa player, Nicolo Zaniolo.
Fagioli admitted that he was taught to bet by Sandro Tonali since 2021. The 22 year old player has been banned from football activities for 7 months.
The Italian football gambling scandal is currently the focus of the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the FIGC. Reportedly, there are more than 40 players who are suspected of being involved in this gambling practice.
