Newcastle Manager Eddie Howe on Why the Club Won’t Sign Ronaldo or Neymar: Focus on Discovering Future Stars

He Newcastle manager Eddie Howehas admitted this Friday that the English club cannot undertake “now” possible signings such as that of the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo or the Brazilian Neymar, for which he urged to “discover” future stars of the soccer planet.

“We couldn’t get close to those players, as they are the best in the world. We will never be in a position to pay those transfers and those salaries, so we have to look for them young and turn them into the players they can become”, the coach analyzed at a press conference.

The ‘magpies’ have been the center of multiple speculations about hypothetical signings of different cracks, after the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia happened to own an 80 percent stake in the club. You have already invested more than 250 million euros in new players in the last three transfer periods, and in recent days Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar have been linked to the English entity.

“It is better to discover them before the time comes, before they explode on the world scene,” Howe commented on the possibility of their arrival, arguing that the Financial Fair Play would prevent them from undertaking operations of this type. Newcastle have already acquired players of the stature of Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier, at a modest cost, and others with greater investment such as Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Specifically, regarding Ronaldo and Neymar, the coach acknowledged that “This type of speculation has existed since the first day” that the Saudi consortium entered the club. “Naturally, everyone has assumed that the biggest names in world football will go to Newcastle,” he explained.

“Now we don’t sign that way. Financially, we can’t sign that way at the moment, but we also have to bring the right people and the right players into the group. The transfer market is very complex, you can’t pick a name and bring it. We have to think a lot about what we do, both from an economic and sporting point of view, ”she reflected.

Howe praised the trajectory of Ronaldo and Neymar, “two incredible players”, but insisted that he knows “in what direction” he wants to “take the team” and what they can, “or not”, do in the transfer market.
