Newcastle United have beaten Leeds and West Ham with the signing of free agent Matthew Bondswell, according to a reliable source.
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are about to sign the 18-year-old left-back following his departure from RB Leipzig in January.
The Nottingham Forest academy star moved to Germany in 2018, but after two and a half years in Germany, the young man wanted to return home.
The England U-18 defender failed to break through with the Champions League club and was on loan at FC Dordrecht.
West Ham came close to signing him in January, according to Football Insider. The Hammers held talks with him in January but were unable to close a deal.
Both Chelsea and Sporting Lisbon were also thought to be looking at the player.
However, Newcastle has landed Bondswell, he never made a senior appearance for the Leipzig senior team.
Bondswell is expected to join the Newcastle Under-23 squad, where he will be evaluated by Chris Hogg.

Bruce looking for bargains
Steve Bruce hopes England U-18 star Bondswell can make the leap to the first team squad and challenge Jamal Lewis for a place in the first eleven.
There is unlikely to be a large amount of cash to spend on transfers in the summer and the club is already considering free loans and transfers.
Bruce said last month: “I think what you’re going to see, especially during the pandemic, is that we haven’t seen a lot of major transfers and I don’t see things changing in the summer.
“So I think it will be the same as what I would have thought.
“There will be a few and a privileged few who will have money, but certainly from the way it looks, I don’t think there will be a following on earth this season.”
