Newbridge Drama Group is back with Bog of Cats in Riverbank

Compelling Theatre Awaits: ‘By the Bog of Cats’ Coming to Riverbank Arts Centre

Prepare for an unforgettable theatrical experience as the Newbridge Drama Group presents By the Bog of Cats, a powerful play by renowned Irish playwright Marina Carr, scheduled for performances from November 20 to 23 at the Riverbank Arts Centre.

Set against the haunting backdrop of the Irish midlands, By the Bog of Cats draws inspiration from the Greek tragedy of Medea, interweaving themes of loss, abandonment, and revenge with mystical elements such as ghosts and otherworldly apparitions. The narrative follows the tumultuous journey of Hester Swane, a complex character marked by emotional scars stemming from her childhood abandonment by her mother. Now a settled traveller, Hester faces betrayal once more as her partner, Carthage Kilbride, chooses to abandon her and their child in favor of pursuing his own ambitions.

Behind the Scenes

The production will be directed by Mary Linehan, known for her deft storytelling and ability to bring nuanced characters to life. Notably, the lead roles will be portrayed by esteemed actors Martina Smith as Hester Swane and Keith Walsh as Carthage Kilbride. “We can promise you a play filled with plenty of drama, wonderful characters, and live music onstage! The score was composed and will be performed by local musician Mairead Carroll,” said Carol Duffy, spokesperson for the Newbridge Drama Group.

This gripping play not only explores the personal struggles of its titular character but also paints a larger portrait of societal issues surrounding family, loyalty, and the haunting presence of the past. The ethereal ambiance is expected to be amplified by the poignant live music accompanying the narrative.
