A newborn boy was left in front of the main entrance of the central site of the Bács-Kiskun County Teaching Hospital in Kecskemét on Tuesday, the institution’s spokesperson told MTI on Wednesday.
The baby-saving incubator has been operating in the hospital for years, but the baby was left wrapped in a sheet on the floor at the entrance. The workers of the nearby bakery heard and saw the newborn lying on the floor around four o’clock in the morning when they got to work. The hospital staff was immediately notified and the baby was taken to the children’s ward within minutes. Thanks to his quick finding, he didn’t cool down drastically.
The 3,500-gram, 52-centimeter boy was given the first name Viktor by the hospital staff.
The guardian’s office will decide on the further fate of the baby later, after numerous investigations. The parents of the newborn placed in the incubator can still apply for six weeks, but a different procedure applies to the child left in front of the hospital: this is considered a crime, so the parent will be prosecuted for endangering a minor.
In the past decade, Viktor is the fifth baby entrusted to the care of the hospital. The hospital’s spokesperson said: the infant rescue incubator continues to operate in its old, usual location, on the Nyíri út site, on the side of the parking garage. The newborn can be placed in the incubator completely anonymously and safely, the built-in system automatically notifies the hospital staff if someone leaves a baby.
According to the information of the Bács-Kiskun County Government Office, in the case of the found child, a guardianship order will be issued first, as well as – with the data established by the guardianship authority – a registration procedure will be initiated. If the mother’s identity is revealed after the child’s registration, but before the adoption is approved, the legal representative can, with the consent of the guardianship authority, file a lawsuit to establish motherhood.
A similar case first occurred in January 2012 at the Izsáki úti site of the Kecskemét hospital, where the 1,300-gram newborn was found cold and in a life-threatening condition. The parents of the boy, who was temporarily named Attila Szőke, later came forward. In 2016, a healthy little girl, temporarily named Brigitta Ignácz, was left in the baby rescue device. The third case happened on November 7, 2018: then a little boy, Gábor, was left in the incubator, and a year later, a little girl, Fanni, was entrusted to the hospital staff. The latter three children have since been adopted.
