Newborn Babies Perceive Reality Better Than Adults: Do Not Fall for Optical Illusions

We’re sorry to tell you, but your baby is smarter than you. At least when it comes to optical illusions. Research has shown that we fall for this, but young babies do not.

Newborn babies may have less vision, but they can still perceive in a much more accurate way than we can. This makes them less easy to fool.

Newborns don’t fall for optical illusions

The brains of adults receive all kinds of different information at any time. When we look at something we see colors, shapes, but also movement and direction. Our brains create one image from all that information. Optical illusions involve misbinding: the information is incorrectly combined, causing us to see something other than what is actually there. This information processing has not yet been developed in newborn babies. The information is not merged, so newborns only perceive what is really there and optical illusions do not work.

Until about six months

This has been investigated by scientists from Japan. Their research was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. They presented babies aged five to eight months with an optical illusion. They analyzed their viewing behavior. What turned out? Most babies aged six months and younger did not fall for the optical illusion, while older babies did fall for it. This allowed the researchers to conclude that babies’ information processing starts working around six months, making them susceptible to optical illusions just like adults.
