Newark Barbers Face Uncertain Future as Ordinance Threatens Sunday and Holiday Closures

Newark barbers are experiencing moments of uncertainty due to a new ordinance that is in consultation and that would force these businesses to close on Sundays and holidays.

What set off the alarms, they commented, was a series of police visits to notify compliance with the measure.

“They told us that we had to close the business, that by 7:00 there should be no one here anymore,” said Ángel Cuevas.

The origin was to inform them of an amendment to the 1966 law, which ordered them to close on Sundays and holidays.

“We are in a panic because they are playing with the money we produce,” said César Ártica, owner of one of these barbershops.

“They are going to close us on Sundays and holidays, which is when we make the most money,” he said.

In the municipal council they seek to modify the legislation and reach a middle point with the owners of these businesses.

“We have to meet on a page, where we will be sure that the business does its business and that we are protecting the interest of the inhabitants,” explained councilor Luis Quintana.

One of the proposals that they are not willing to negotiate is that barbershops must allow full vision of the interior of said premises from the street and may not be obstructed by non-transparent glass.

“For the police it is important that it be visible, it is night, they do not know what is happening (inside the business),” Quintana said.

He added that they are not closed to allow it to open on Sunday as long as it closes early.

“From Monday to Saturday until 10:00 p.m., on Sunday we believe that until 6:00 p.m. is correct,” he said.

The measure would also apply to similar businesses such as nail salons.
