New Zealand’s Williamson and Nicholls form huge partnership, reminiscent of Dravid-Laxman legend – Asianet News

Wellington: Big score for New Zealand in Wellington Cricket Test against Sri Lanka. New Zealand scored 580 runs for the loss of four wickets in the first innings thanks to the double centuries of Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls. Williamson scored 215 runs while Nicol remained unbeaten on 200 runs.

Williamson and Nicholls shared a record partnership of 363 runs for the third wicket and became only the eighth batting partnership to achieve this feat. This is the second time in the career of Williamson and Nicholls that the Kiwis added more than 300 runs. Williamson and Nicholls are the sixth partnership to have more than one 300+ partnership.

Mahela Jayawardene-Kumar Sangakkara, Don Bradman-Will Ponsford, Michael Clarke-Ricky Ponting, Mohammad Yousuf-Younis Khan, Rahul Dravid-VVS Laxman have previously achieved this feat. Hashim Amla-Jacques Kallis and Herschelle Gibbs-Graeme Smith have put up 300+ partnerships each. The duo’s 363 today is the fifth highest by any batting partnership in Tests for New Zealand.

Apart from this, Williamson became the first New Zealand batsman to score a century in three consecutive Tests in his career. Williamson scored his sixth career double century, joining the record held by Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. Williamson completed the double in 285 balls while Nicholls completed the double in 240 balls.
