New Zealand reported that one person died of heart muscle inflammation or myocarditis after receiving Covid-19 vaccine Pfizer.
The information was released by New Zealand’s Ministry of Health following a review by an independent vaccine safety monitoring board into the death of a woman after receiving the US company’s vaccine.
The vaccine safety monitoring board considered the woman, whose age and identity was not disclosed, died of myocarditis, which is known to be a rare side effect of Pfizer’s vaccine.
“This is the first case in New Zealand where a death in the days following vaccination was linked to the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine,” the New Zealand Ministry of Health said on Monday (30/8) as quoted. Reuters.
The New Zealand Ministry of Health said the case had been referred to the coroner’s team, an officer who examines bodies in cases of sudden death. Until now, the cause of death has not been determined with certainty.
Meanwhile, the vaccine safety monitoring board said myocarditis may result from vaccination. The council also noted that there were other medical problems occurring at the same time that might affect the effect of the vaccination.
However, New Zealand’s vaccine monitoring board insists that the benefits of the Pfzier vaccine still far outweigh the risks of side effects.
“The benefits of vaccination with the Pfizer vaccine far outweigh the risks of Covid-19 infection and vaccine side effects, including myocarditis,” the council said.
To date, Pfizer representatives in New Zealand did not immediately respond to reports of the deaths.
New Zealand is considered one of the countries that managed to control the Covid-19 infection at the beginning of the pandemic.
However, recently the government of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is facing a surge in cases of the corona virus due to the Delta variant which continues to spread rapidly in the world.
On Sunday (29/8) alone, New Zealand reported 83 cases of the Delta variant of Covid-19.
The New Zealand government even implemented a lockdown on 27-31 August. time lockdown, the restriction rules are slightly relaxed.
But Auckland, the largest city at the center of the outbreak in New Zealand, has remained in lockdown for much longer.
Ardern admitted that her party was looking for more information regarding the current wave of spread of the Covid-19 virus.
“If we need to tighten our restrictions further, we will,” Ardern said.
So far, the total number of Covid-19 cases in New Zealand has reached 3,464 cases with 26 deaths.
