New Zealand authorities said on Monday that one person had died after being vaccinated with a dose of the Pfizer vaccine. It is the first person in the country to die after being shot with Pfizer. This is reported by the Reuters news agency.
The information was released by the Department of Health following an investigation by an independent COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring board into a woman’s death after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. The woman’s age was not mentioned in the statement from the ministry. Pfizer has not yet commented on the death.
Myocarditis
“The board believed the woman’s death was due to myocarditis, which is known to be a rare side effect of Pfizer’s vaccine,” the statement said. Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle that can limit the organ’s ability to pump blood and cause changes in the rhythm of the heartbeat.
“This is the first time in New Zealand that a death has been linked to a vaccination with Pfizer,” the Ministry of Health said. “The case has been referred to the coroner’s office and the cause of death has not yet been determined, but the board is convinced that the person in question died as a result of myocarditis.”
The council also noted that other medical problems arose at the same time that may have affected the post-vaccination outcome. “The benefits of vaccination with Pfizer’s vaccine still far outweigh the risk of both corona infection and vaccine side effects, including myocarditis,” the council said in the statement.
