New Zealand postpones elections due to new coronavirus outbreak

The government of the prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, decided to postpone legislative elections in New Zealand as a result of the latest cases of Covid-19 in the country.

In this way, the September 19 elections will now be held on October 17, as reported by BBC.

Ardern explained that the postponement will allow the electoral commission to enable early voting centers and give the parties the opportunity to carry out their campaigns, since the country keeps the inhabitants of Auckland confined until August 26 and social restrictions on the rest of the country.

Last Friday the confinement in the city of Auckland, with 1.7 million inhabitants, the most populous in the country, was extended for twelve days to fight against the outbreak of coronavirus, which was detected on Tuesday after reaching the nation for 102 days without local infections.

Experts have determined that the current outbreak strain is different from the one detected in the first wave of the pandemic in the oceanic country, so it is suspected that it comes from abroad.

New Zealand, which was subjected to one of the strictest lockdowns in the world at the beginning of the pandemic when it had about fifty cases and had returned to normal practice on June 9, currently records 1,251 cases of Covid-19, including 22 deceased, of which 49 infections remain active.
