Ardern, who is the leader of the Labor Party, said she resigned because she did not have enough energy to lead.

Quoted from Guardian, Ardern said it was time for her to step down.

“Such a privileged role (as a leader) comes with a responsibility. The responsibility is to know when you are the right person to lead and also when you are not,” he said.

Ardern admits she doesn’t know what it takes as a prime minister, and she says she has fallen short of it.

“I know what this job requires. And I know that I no longer have enough tanks to do it justice. It’s that simple,” he said.

Ardern’s term will end no later than February 7, 2023. However, she will continue in her role as an MP until the final election term of 2023.

“I am human, politicians are human. We give everything we can for as long as we can. And then it’s time for me, it’s time (to step down),” he said.

Ardern said she had thought about her decision over the summer break and had come to the conclusion she couldn’t do it.

During her leadership, Ardern admits that she has had years full of challenges, such as focusing on housing, poverty, climate change, domestic terror events, major natural disasters, pandemics and economic crises.

Over the past year, he has also faced many threats of violence, especially from conspiracy groups related to vaccines and Covid-19.

However, increased work-related risks are no reason for him to back down.

“I don’t want to leave the impression that the difficulties faced in politics are the reason people leave. Yes, it does have an impact. After all we are humans, but that is not the basis of my decision,” he said.

He said he had no idea what he would do in the future.

Ardern said she would spend more time with her family.

He also thanked his partner and daughter, in which they were the ones who sacrificed the most.

“Dear Neve, I was really looking forward to seeing you when you start school this year. And as for Clarke, let’s get married,” he said.

Ardern also made it clear that her recent drop in the polls was not her reason for dropping out.

“I’m not leaving because I believe we can’t win the election, but because I believe we can and will do it, and we need a new shoulder to the challenge,” he said.

So far it is not clear who will replace Jacinda after she resigned.

However, co-leader and Treasury Secretary Grant Robertson is widely considered to have a good chance of succeeding him.

The right choice

Some observers believe Ardern’s decision to step down is the right choice for her reputation.

“Leaving now is the best thing for his reputation. He will leave on good terms rather than lose the election,” said Bryce Edwards, political analyst at Victor University Wellington New Zealand. CNN.

He considered Ardern’s resignation a surprise. But according to him this is not a big surprise.

“He is celebrated around the world but his government is falling in opinion polls,” he said.
