New Zealand moves to raise voting age to 16 | New Zealand raises the voting age to 16

Wellington: New Zealand moves to raise the minimum voting age to 16. The country had taken such a move after the Supreme Court requested that the matter be heard in Parliament. Legislation to lower the age can only be enacted if it has the support of 75% of MPs.

Prime Minister Jacinta Ardern said she was in favor, but it is not possible to legislate only in her interest or that of the government and the opposition should also cooperate. Teens are campaigning for the right to vote at age 16. The opposition did not object. In countries like Austria, Brazil and Cuba, 16-year-olds have the right to vote.
