New Zealand commemorates victims of Christchurch attack | NOW

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand commemorated the victims of the bloody attack in Christchurch on Saturday with hundreds in attendance.

On March 15, 2019, 51 people were killed there when Australian Brenton Tarrant, armed with semi-automatic weapons, attacked visitors to two mosques in that city. He simultaneously streamed the slaughter via Facebook.

Ardern said at the memorial that words could heal the deep wounds caused by the attack. “Words cannot work miracles, but they have the power to heal. So we must use them wisely,” the prime minister told those in attendance, including many from the Muslim community.

Tarrant has been sentenced to life without parole for his actions. Never before has anyone in New Zealand been sentenced to life imprisonment.
