Campbell Wright, just 20, won gold in the sprint at the world juniors in early March. A performance of choice for this biathlete who is one of the very best of his generation.
The New Zealander, who has been training for a year with the USA team, has already finished 15th, 20th and 23rd in the World Cup, proof of great potential.
Seduced by the guy, the American biathlon team, which is looking to rebuild itself, has just offered him a career plan and financial, technical and logistical assistance if he decides to change his passport.
So what will Campbell Wright decide?
“It’s a million dollar question, I have the possibility of doing it but at the moment I’m not sure. Of course they offer me means greater than where my heart and my fasteners.” he says.
Fair play and understanding, New Zealand biathlon boss Tim David said he expected such an attempt from the USA.
“They invited him to train for a year because they hope to keep him with them. I think it could well happen, it remains to be seen when. In the United States there are many biathlon clubs, in New Zealand we only have one.
It’s true that Campbell has progressed with them and we only wish the best for him. If he leaves we won’t lose a kiwi, but we will give a kiwi a chance to become a world-class biathlete.”
Unless the situation turns around, Campbell Wright is gradually moving towards the USA team, probably the only way for him to continue to progress and to achieve, perhaps, all his dreams.
