The New York tradition of piling trash bags on sidewalks for collection is on the verge of extinction. As of today, all 200,000 businesses in the city are required to place the bags in trash cans – as has long been the practice elsewhere in the United States and the world. The new rule marks the next phase in the metropolis’ fight against what Mayor Eric Adams has described as a “24-hour rat buffet.”

Garbage from businesses accounts for nearly half of the approximately 20,000 tons of waste collected daily in the city, according to the mayor. Adams has made combating New York’s rampant rat population a key priority.
