Adams likes to boast of being a working class child
The district mayor of Brooklyn, who hung the police uniform on the hook after 22 years, brings another blue collar with him to town hall. The now 61-year-old grew up in poor conditions – in Brooklyn and Queens. The son of a cleaning lady and a butcher likes to boast of being a working class child.
Nobody does a nine-to-five job in this town. Some work around the clock. And if you’re a mayor who works from 9 to 5, then you can’t understand the concerns of the people here.
The slim African American with the big smile brings them a strong story. When he was 15, he found out firsthand what police violence against black people meant. Two police officers arrest him. They kick him in the stomach repeatedly. Then Adams makes the decision: he’ll become a police officer himself to save other black kids from doing that.
Against a reduction in police funds
Long before “Black Lives Matter” he founded an organization of black police officers who campaigned against racism among the security forces. But Adams rejects a cut in police funds, as demanded by parts of the left wing of the Democrats after the violent death of the African American George Floyd. The cops have to do their job.
If you have a police station where people cannot be questioned, it is not responsible policing.
The emergency services would have to be strengthened and properly trained to take action against crime. Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, it has been growing like poverty and homelessness.
Encouragement from Wall Street to the Bronx
One of the greatest tasks of the new mayor will therefore be to safely lead the eight million metropolis out of this crisis. Many believe that he can, says one man: “Eric Adams wants to unite the New Yorkers.”
The new mayor has been welcomed from Wall Street to the Bronx. Adams has the support of many millionaires. The democrat has made it clear: After his left predecessor Bill de Blasio, the city will move a little to the right with him. But at the same time he wants to fight for justice. “
There is a group of people here who live permanently in systemic poverty. If we want to turn the city inside out, we have to end these injustices. And there are many ways to do that.
At the turn of the year, Adams moves into Manhattan City Hall as the second African American in history. And Adams is proud. This shows that every dishwasher could make it to the position of mayor of the largest city in the United States.
