NEW YORK (AP) — Large crowds of people gathered in New York’s historic Chinatown on Sunday to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
Various Asian communities around the world began celebrating the Lunar New Year on February 10, beginning the Year of the Dragon according to the Chinese zodiac. Fireworks, parades and other rituals focus on saying goodbye to bad luck and welcoming prosperity.
In New York, there were already celebrations in larger Chinese enclaves such as Queens and Brooklyn. Although the new symbolic lunar cycle concluded this week with the full moon, the Manhattan parade was scheduled for the weekend.
On Sunday, celebrants took to the streets of the famous “Chinatown” for a colorful parade, despite the frigid temperatures.
