A new report indicates that New Yorkers owe more than $2 billion in fines to the city.
Parking violations and speeding violations account for the majority of the debt.
Analysis by the city’s Independent Budget Office found that these violations reached $6 billion from 2017 to 2022.
Approximately 82 percent of that sum has already been paid and about $1 billion is still owed.
In the last two years, the charges have risen to almost two and a half billion dollars.
The municipal government has recovered some 1.8 billion and there are still some 600 million to be paid.
Violations against the Department of Buildings make up the second largest share of fines, at more than $600 million.
Other penalties include unpaid Housekeeping violations, uncollected property taxes, emergency home repair receipts, and other Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings violations.
