A young Jewish man was stabbed early Saturday morning near the headquarters of the Chabad movement in New York by someone shouting “Free Palestine,” according to local rabbi Yaacov Behrman and video surveillance footage posted online. The incident took place in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. According to Behrman, who says he knows the victim, the attacker asked the young man: “Do you want to die? ” before stabbing him.
The victim was taken to hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. A video of the incident shows the attacker approaching a group of young Jewish men before stabbing one. The victim remained standing after the attack, apparently examining his injuries.
“This is a very serious incident,” Behrman said. “The victim could have been killed. This violent act shows the dangerous influence of anti-Semitic incitement and hatred by some politicians and community leaders in New York and across the United States.”
According to a news website The new world of Yeshivas, the victim would be a member of the Lubavitch community and the attacker, a black man in his twenties. The New York Police Department is currently treating the incident as a hate crime.
Members of the community chased the assailant and held him until the police arrived and arrested him.
New York Police Deputy Chief Richie Taylor announced an increased police presence in the area of the attack, at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue, until the end of the Jewish holiday in October.
This event comes amid a rise in anti-Semitism around the world, against the backdrop of the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
