NEW YORK.- Rookie Anthony Volpe hit his first career grand slam as he capped a seven-run fifth inning, and the New York Yankees routed the Oakland Athletics 11-3 on Wednesday for their first sweep this season.
Heading into a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, owners of the best record in the majors, the Yankees went on to win three straight for the first time in 2023.
Harrison Bader hit a three-run home run in the first inning that was confirmed upon video review and DJ LeMahieu added a two-run homer in the fifth. The Yankees hit nine home runs in the series.
Volpe, who snapped a 17-0 at-bat skid Tuesday, gave the Yankees an 11-2 lead when Rico Garcia’s first-offer fastball disappeared.
With the Yankees up 1-0 on Gleyber Torres’ sacrifice fly, Bader flied out off Oakland lefty Kyle Muller (1-3) just clear of the right-field wall.

For the Athletics, the Dominican Esteury Ruiz 5-0. Colombian Jordan Diaz 3-0.
For the Yankees, the Venezuelans Torres 3-1, one scored and one towed; and Oswaldo Cabrera 3-0, one scored.
