After the Yankees’ worst campaign in the last three decades, the owner of the Bronx Mules, Hal Steinbrenner, assured that there will be personnel changes.

NEW YORKNew York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said Wednesday the team may make some personnel changes after they held three days of meetings last week after the team had its worst season in three decades.

“We are going to make some changes. Some may be more subtle than others,” Steinbrenner said during Sportico’s Invest in Sports conference. “Possibly personal, but not necessarily staff. It could be internship. It could be communication.”

New York missed the postseason for the first time since 2016. The Yankees finished 82-80, their worst record since 1992 despite a projected payroll of $281 million and a projected luxury tax of $31 million.

Steinbrenner said a group of 15 team officials met in Tampa, Florida.

“At the moment it was on, but in a respectful way,” he said.

Steinbrenner recalled asking the group “to leave their ego at the door.” Among the topics discussed were the health of the players, the culture in the clubhouse, analytics and scouts.

“I want them to discuss everything, our entire philosophy,” he said. “I want you to hold each other back.”

Steinbrenner’s father George acquired the Yankees in 1983 and Hal became the majority owner in 2008. George Steinbrenner died in 2010. Hal indicated that the team will remain in the family and that his nephews and nieces could succeed him.

Along with Steinbrenner, Yankees president Randy Levine commented that because of revenue distribution, the Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays had to increase their attendance and that some teams should stop “complaining and crying.”

“You can’t have two Florida teams averaging 15,000,” he said.
