New York Yankees’ Luis Severino Sidelined and Facing Uncertain Future

NEW YORK (AP) — Dominican Luis Severino went on the disabled list Saturday and possibly pitched for the last time for the New York Yankees.

The Yankees indicated that the pitcher has an upper body injury and are awaiting test results.

Severino exited in the fifth inning of his start against Milwaukee on Friday after allowing a single to Brice Turang on a 92-mile stretch.

After his 70th pitch, Severino threw down his glove in front of the mound, squatted in pain and left the mound. The 29-year-old put his hand on his left oblique and was replaced by Jhony Brito after he was checked by a trainer and manager Aaron Boone.

“I feel like someone shot me. It is a strong and watery pain,” said an emotional Severino, trying to hold back tears.

Severino is eligible for free agency after the season. He is 4-8 with a 6.65 ERA, but was 2-0 in three starts before Friday after going 0-4.

“I know I was starting to be in a good place and we were hoping to have a strong end to the season and be in a good place before the end of the season,” Boone admitted before Saturday’s game against Milwaukee.

Severino did not debut until May 12 due to tightness in his back muscle. His salary is 15 million in his option year after a five-year, 55 million deal.
