KANSAS CITY — Considering that the Yankees came into this season with aspirations of a title, they anticipated a positive record as a given. But in recent weeks, as their postseason aspirations slipped away, there was a certain level of motivation to not be the roster that ended a streak of above-.500 seasons that spanned three decades.
Despite falling short of the main goal, at least this New York squad can say that they finished with a positive record. Dominican Estevan Florial drove in the go-ahead run, and Venezuelan Gleyber Torres drove in two runs as the Bombers (82-79) sealed a positive record for the 31st consecutive year, with a 5-2 victory over the Royals Saturday at Kauffman Stadium.
“Tomorrow we will go home, so inevitably that is the balance of our season,” declared the driver of the Bronx team, Aaron Boone. “Our expectation is to play in October, and the fact that we won’t is hard to swallow.”
The Yankees have finished above .500 in every season since 1993 — the second-longest streak in AL/NL history. Only the Yankees from 1926 to 1964 enjoyed greater success, 39 seasons.
“I am proud of this group, and I truly think that there are tremendous opportunities to grow in the midst of adversity and what has been a tough campaign,” Boone added. “We went through a lot this year, and I am very satisfied with the way these guys have stepped up every day in a season that did not turn out as we anticipated.”
