New York Yankees announce Néstor Cortés as Opening Day starter for 2024 MLB season

There are just under two weeks left until the start of the 2024 Major League Baseball season and for this reason the teams are beginning to define their rotations and line-ups for the first games of the harvest.

For this reason the New York Yankees are finally defining who will be in charge of taking the ball on the first day of the upcoming harvest.

The elbow injury of star Gerrit Cole has left a deep void within the New York Yankees starting staff for the first months of the 2024 harvest.

Therefore, the troop led by Aaron Boone has left-handed pitcher Néstor Cortés as one of those called upon to be vital, in order to help make up for such a loss.

The Yankees will have a hostile Opening Day, since they will visit the Houston Astros on March 28 at Minute Maid Park. As if that were not enough, he will do it without Cole, the last Cy Young of the American League.

For this reason Néstor Cortés will start for the Yankees during the opening daysince it complies with the routine days of rest and the ideal preparation.

“The more you rest, the better.”“, says the 29-year-old Cuban to MLB.com, in relation to the fact of arriving with six days of rest to Opening Day in Houston.

In this preseason, Cortés has made a total of three appearances, in which he has accumulated a record of 0-1, with an ERA of 8.10 in 10 innings of work. His best performance was on March 3 against the Detroit Tigers, where he worked four innings and only allowed one hit and one run.

Aaron Judge hopes to “be ready for Opening Day”

For his part, Aaron Judge stood in front of about a dozen reporters Friday afternoon when an unexpected question suddenly arose.

“Aaron,” began reporter and first baseman Anthony Rizzo, “do you think it’s fair to your Grapefruit League teammates that you’re not with them?”

Judge did not lose focus and gave a lecture on how to avoid a question like that.

“Look, those guys have been working hard all year.”, said the gunner. “They are having good training sessions. “It’s fun to witness and be a part of.”

Rizzo’s attendance served as a prelude to another much more serious issue, about a Judge who continues to deal with discomfort in his abdomen, after undergoing an MRI analysis on Monday that came back negative.

There is uncertainty about when Judge’s return to Grapefruit League action will be. Yankees manager Aaron Boone had said he planned to have Judge as center fielder for Saturday’s game against the Blue Jays, but the slugger said he is not sure if he will play.
