New York City Mayor Eric Adams is expected to announce Wednesday that the school week will be canceled the day before the start of the Christmas break, according to sources familiar with his decision.
Children have no classes from December 24th to January 2nd. Usually, there is no problem. This year, however, Christmas Eve falls on a Tuesday, meaning that children would only report to school on Monday, December 23, and then the holidays would begin.
According to Chalkbeat, Adams’ decision comes after a 12-year-old Brooklyn boy appealed to his administration and the student body at large. He started a Change.org petition, changing the December 23 school day to another day at the end of the year, which would make the last day Friday, June 27.
As of Wednesday, the boy’s petition had more than 22,000 signatures.
As he writes, “My name is Isaac and I’m in the seventh grade in Brooklyn, New York. I like to think about calendars and I noticed a problem: the winter holidays are scheduled to start on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, which means that we will have a week of days before the holidays -days.
This does not make sense. Attendance will be very low on that day. Children with travel plans must change their families or they will be marked absent. “Kids and teachers will be upset, and kids won’t be able to learn anything or have a party with all their friends (because of low attendance).”
