New York: woman in corona coma has baby

The story of how little Leah saw the light of day is truly one of a difficult birth: The girl was born by caesarean section on April 8, in a hospital in the US state of New York. Her mother could not hug the child: The doctors had put 41-year-old Adriana Torres into an artificial coma because she was so seriously ill with Covid-19.

The woman was six months pregnant when she was rushed to Winthrop Hospital on April 5 with a bad cough. Her condition worsened and the doctors opted for the artificial coma. On April 8, they decided to “bring the baby to reduce the mother’s oxygen requirement,” the attending physician told the New York Post newspaper (click here for Message).

Shortly afterwards – on April 10th – the mother woke up from the coma. It was her 41st birthday. The clinic confirmed the process to the dpa news agency. “It was the best medicine, the medicine my body needed,” said the mother of the New York Post. The 41-year-old is now back home.

Leah has also been tested for the corona virus in the meantime. The test was negative.
