The “VIRTUAL NYC” program is an initiative to connect people with the cultural experiences of the city in response to temporary closures due to the coronavirus emergency.
The official destination advocacy organization for the five boroughs of New York City, NYC & Company, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Mayor’s Office for Media and Entertainment, highlights novel ways to virtually experience the iconic cultural scene of the city for all those who seek an escape in light of the current global situation of Covid-19. The resource at nycgo.com/virtualnyc will be updated periodically throughout this season.

New York City is home to one of the largest cultural communities in the world, “And the response of this community to the unusual challenges we face now is precisely what we need,” said Acting Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Kathleen Hughes. From broadcasting opera performances to arts education courses for young people, the cultural community has moved its programming virtual to continue serving residents and engaging audiences. There will always be something for everyone who wants to experience New York City from the comfort of their home. These are some places that cannot be missed.
American Museum of Natural History
By visiting the museum’s Explore page, little ones can have fun with educational videos and enjoy interactive activities that are intended to promote conservation and a passion for the natural world.
Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
In the new section of the website “Experience Intrepid Anywhere”, families can take a virtual tour of this WWII aircraft carrier, explore images of the equipment on board, watch interviews with former crew members and take advantage of all the educational resources available on the site.
Museum of the City of New York
The museum continues to highlight the history of New York City with more than 200,000 items from its online collection, with videos from a wide range of recent shows available on its YouTube channel.
The Museum of Illustration
The Society of Illustrators will continue to advance its mission with exhibits, panels, multi-media broadcasts and online children’s activities, all hosted in the SI At Your Service section of its official website.
ReelAbilities Film Festival
The ReelAbilities Film Festival, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, is the nation’s largest festival dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories, and artistic expressions of people with disabilities. ReelAbilities will take place online from March 31 to April 6. Virtual tickets, available free or low ($ 6), include a link to the film, as well as an interactive question and answer section with the filmmakers.
Women Make Movies
A virtual film festival that commemorates International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, highlighting feminist films from around the world. Initially released for March, organizers are looking to extend its presentation.
New York City Ballet
City Ballet The Podcast features in-depth conversations with dancers, choreographers, orchestra members, and much more. Also worth following @tilerpeck (NYCB lead dancer for over ten years) who helps aspiring dancers pass the time with free ballet classes on Instagram at 1pm every day.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
