New York winemakers take courses to carry weapons and defend themselves against thieves

New York City winemakers have made a crucial and daunting decision: They are taking the relevant courses to carry firearmslegally, and thus be able to defend their businesses from possible theft.

Although for some it is a bit drastic, these business owners are working together to make the measure effective and address crime in the five boroughs.

The announcement comes after a warehouse, located on 142th Street in Manhattan, was robbed on Sunday. A 30-year-old man died from a gunshot wound during the robbery.

Radhamés Rodríguez, president of Bodegueros Unidos de América, says that the plan not only consists of carrying the legal weapon for protection, but let everyone keep it a secret. In this way, thieves will not know which warehouse is prepared to defend themselves.

“Everyone who has a gun permit must keep it secret, so that no one knows that they have it, so they (the criminals) refrain from carrying out any robbery,” he told Univision 41.

About 200 winemakers take the course to legally carry weapons

He also commented that there are 16 surveillance cameras in his warehouse, however, he assures that the assailants do not respect and do not mind appearing on camera, since their faces are covered.

Our reporter Joaquín Torres explained that Nearly 200 winemakers are taking the course to carry a legal weapon.

The crime that leaves the most losses is the theft of products secretly, which has increased up to 64% in the last 4 years. However, winemakers are aware that the weapons they legally carry will be to defend themselves against armed robberies.

Sammy Arévalo, retired lieutenant of the New York Police Department, spoke with Univision 41 and reiterates that the training that winery owners receive “They are for self-defense, when they feel in danger of losing their life”.

The course lasts 3 to 6 months and some winemakers have already completed it.
