New York will create a commission to eradicate “institutional racism”

New York, Mar 23 (EFE) .- The city of New York reacted on Tuesday to the wave of racist attacks against the Asian minority in the United States by announcing the creation of a commission “to eradicate systemic and institutional racism.”

“Our mission is to eradicate systemic racism in New York City. The Racial Justice Commission has the power to propose permanent and transformative ideas for our Government and our city. This moment demands nothing less,” De Blasio said at a conference. press.

Last Tuesday, eight people were killed, including six Asian women, in a shooting in Atlanta (Georgia) at three Asian massage parlors.

The first news quickly linked the attack with the wave of hate crimes against people of Asian origin, but the suspect later admitted to the authorities that he fired at those establishments, because he “blamed them” for keeping his addiction to sex active and wanted to ” remove the temptation. ”

The mayor’s announcement also comes after this weekend hundreds of people came out to protest in different parts of the city to demand an end to racist attacks.

The City Council announced the composition of this commission, which will be made up of 11 people and led by Jennifer Jones Austin, executive director of the NGO FPWA, dedicated to the fight against poverty.

Its members include representatives of the Asian, Latino and Black communities, as well as associations dedicated to combating racism.

“Systemic racism is ingrained in the institutions and structures of our city. We must root out racism by attacking it from the very center, which is the revision of the statutes,” Austin said.

The official also showed her commitment to “listen to communities throughout New York City and present revisions to end racism and promote true and lasting justice and inclusion for all.”

In a statement, local authorities acknowledge that the black community has been “especially” impacted by “systemic racism,” but adds that other people of color, immigrants and marginalized communities have also suffered injustice and inequality.

“The commission must harness the transformative potential of this moment in history to identify significant structural changes and political reforms that serve to advance racial justice and equality and to begin to dismantle the structural cluster,” the note said. EFE
