New York wants to enforce quarantine more for some US travelers | 08/05/20

NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – New York wants to pay more attention to compliance with quarantine rules for travelers and returnees from Corona areas in the country. From Thursday on, employees on bridges, tunnels and in Penn Station will insist on the 14-day mandatory quarantine, which is currently valid for travelers from 35 US states. They have to enter their hotel or address in a form.

At the city’s three airports, all travelers from these areas have long been required to fill out the form after landing. According to New York State regulations, failure to deliver could result in a subpoena and a $ 2,000 fine; if the quarantine is broken, even $ 10,000 or 15 days’ imprisonment is possible. There are no figures on how often these penalties were imposed.

“We will not give up in our hard work now and continue to do everything we can to keep New Yorkers safe and healthy,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday.

New York was one of the global epicentres of the pandemic in March and April, with over 220,000 confirmed infected people. Around 20,000 people died as a result of the virus. de Blasio has been criticized for waiting too long to adopt stronger containment measures.

After more than 6,000 new infections a day in the peak phase, no more than 500 new infections have been confirmed on any day since the beginning of June, and on some days the city also reports zero deaths.

In many other parts of the United States, the virus is still very widespread; after significant increases in July, the number of newly infected people reached a plateau last week. Overall, the United States is the country by far the most confirmed infected and dead./cfa/DP/he
