New York Voters Support Casino Expansion

Only 16% of voters oppose the decision.

According to a survey conducted by Global Strategy Group, seventy percent of New York’s registered voters support expanding casino casinos Resorts World Aqueduct y MGM Empire City Yonkers in large-scale chains.

In the wake of the covid-19 pandemic, gambling hall revenues decreased by $ 600 million during 2020, the multiple restrictions such as isolation and the curfew established by the authorities as a measure to avoid contagion, caused the closure for several months, damaging them and generating not only the lack of profits but in many cases losses.

Currently, with a decrease in cases thanks to the vaccination process, the economy seems to be reactivated with the reopening of service in interiors of restaurants, the return of tourism in iconic attractions such as Time Square and the indication of the return of Broadway lights short term.

Casino owners are preparing for a return to normalcy and evidence of this is that the Resorts World-Aqueduct seems ready for the legal right to expand the game. The firm recently announced that it is building a hotel next to its current casino.

The large amount of support in the voters is due to the announcement of the fiscal crisis in New York and the amount of revenue that the casinos could generate to solve it.

“The billions of dollars in license fees and millions per year in additional tax revenue and job protection in the hardest hit communities in Yonkers and the Bronx are an effective way to persuade undecided voters to lean toward supporting the proposal. Once voters are made aware of these benefits, undecided voters move in favor of the proposal and support rises to 83 percent statewide. ” noted the analysis of the survey conducted by Global Strategies.

The state has about a budget deficit of $ 14.5 billionTherefore, in the survey the key question to voters was by what possible resolution they would prefer to handle it.

From the voters, 56% said that gaming revenue was the best option, 7% that they preferred tax increases and 6% in favor of spending cuts. A third of those surveyed were undecided.

Additionally, it will be divided whether the casino games were to be operated only by the four upstate casinos or also through the Resorts World-Aqueduct and Empire City-Yonkers gambling halls.

51% of voters said betting should be operated through the Aqueduct and Yonkers lounges, in comparison with 21% who said only through the four upstate casinos, and the rest did not indicate a preference.

Under current law, New York can license three more large-scale casinos in 2023.

Despite his budget plan, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is already considering preliminary proposals from potential casino bidders.
