New York Vendée – Les Sables d’Olonne: The Decisive Transatlantic Race for the Vendée Globe 2024

This Thursday, July 6, the organizing company of the famous non-stop, unassisted solo round the world unveiled the notice of race for its transatlantic race, the New York Vendée – Les Sables d’Olonne. This event, which will start on May 29, 2024 off New York, will be decisive for the next Vendée Globe, in several respects. Explanations.

This 2nd edition of the New York Vendée – Les Sables d’Olonne, the first organized by the organization of the Vendée Globe, will start from the United States next May. The transatlantic race is already shaping up to be a major event, arousing strong sporting enthusiasm: around forty skippers are expected on the starting line, compared to 14 in 2016… A first record has thus almost been recorded.

And given the dazzling technological development of boats in recent years, the reference time for the event, established by Jérémie Beyou in 2016 – 9d 16h 57min 52s – should also be shattered!

A few months before the Vendée Globe, this last confrontation will be an opportunity to determine the forces in the presence of the next solo round the world race, non-stop and without assistance. This is the ultimate opportunity for the favorites to assert their omnipotence before competing in the greatest of all offshore races.

Before setting off on this demanding 3,200-mile course, the sailors will offer the New York public a great show in Manhattan Bay, organized on May 24, 2024 at the feet of the Statue of Liberty. A highlight called “Liberty Race” which promises breathtaking images.

Last qualifying race for the Vendée Globe

This crossing of the Atlantic will be the last qualifying race for the Vendée Globe 2024. As a reminder, to qualify, skippers must participate in two qualifying races: one in 2022 or 2023 and one in 2024. They must necessarily complete the one of them, in a time not to exceed the winner’s time increased by 50%. This is why taking part in this race is a real challenge for future competitors in the Vendée Globe.

Last selection race: 1 mile traveled = 1.5 miles counted

The New York Vendée – Les Sables d’Olonne is also the last race in which skippers will rack up miles with a view to their selection for the Vendée Globe, if there were more than 40 to qualify. To underline its importance, the organizers have given it a special feature: for each mile sailed, the sailors will count 1.5 miles. Thus, this transatlantic race counts more than any other selection race!

The Vendée Globe line-up unveiled at the finish

After crossing the Atlantic and ascending the mythical channel of Les Sables d’Olonne, 40 competitors will win their precious sesame: the entry ticket to the next Vendée Globe!

A unique moment for the teams, sponsors and sailors for whom this round the world represents the culmination of a 4-year project and for many of them the dream of a lifetime. Sharing and emotion will be the key words of these arrivals which will be like a dress rehearsal for those of the Vendée Globe in 2025.

The appointment is given on June 9, 2024 for the Prize Giving of the race which will be organized on the Vendée Globe esplanade in Les Sables d’Olonne.

Alain Leboeuf, President of the New York Vendée – Les Sables d’Olonne, the Vendée Globe and the Vendée Department: “It is a great pride to organize the New York Vendée – Les Sables d’Olonne. This race is of major importance because it is the last qualification and selection race for the Vendée Globe. »
