New York, Jan 6 (EFE) .- The state of New York will send 1,000 members of the National Guard to Washington to support the peaceful transition of the US presidency, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reported on Wednesday.
“At the request of the US National Guard, I will deploy 1,000 members of the National Guard from New York to Washington for up to two weeks to assist and facilitate the peaceful transition of presidential power,” Cuomo said in a statement, which stressed that this decision will not affect the efforts to fight the coronavirus in the region.
“For 244 years, the cornerstone of our democracy has been the peaceful transition of power, and New York stands ready to help ensure that the will of the American people is fulfilled,” the governor added.
Cuomo’s decision came a few hours after hundreds of supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington, which forced the suspension of the certification session of Joe Biden’s electoral victory, a process until today purely of paperwork, already evict legislators and Vice President Mike Pence.
