Starting Tuesday, October 17, New York will provide one-time payments of $100 to households with children under age 17 who qualify and receive public assistance, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday. This is through the Pandemic Emergency Assistance Fund. In total, 120,000 families with children will benefit. The Democrat pointed out that to achieve the payments, $12 million in federal funds are being used to help provide this single payment of family economic support to families of low income with children and will be administered by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

The Democrat pointed out that to achieve the payments $12 million in federal funds are being used to help provide that one-time payment of family economic support to low-income families with children and that will be administered by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance of the state of NY.
“Due to our success in providing assistance from the federal Pandemic Emergency Assistance Fund to some of our most vulnerable residents, New York has qualified to receive additional funds that were not used by other states,” said Governor Hochul. “This federal funding further helps households that have suffered the economic toll caused by the pandemic and provides these families with a quick injection of cash to help with their expenses.”
The Pandemic Emergency Assistance Fund was created as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 with the intent of assisting families in need affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Under federal guidelines, the funds were to be used to issue non-recurring benefits to affected households with children to address a specific short-term situation or need.
New York initially received $128 million in federal funds through the Pandemic Emergency Assistance Fund. States that spent their entire initial allocation, like New York, could choose to receive additional funds from states that had unspent funds. That’s why New York received an additional $12 million.
What is public assistance
Public Assistance provides monthly grants to help low-income individuals and families meet basic needs, such as housing. This program helps more than 590,000 New Yorkers who may be temporarily unemployed or unable to work, as well as very low-wage workers and children.
