The fastest was a British Airways Boeing 747-436, which – pushed by the strong wind – took four hours and 56 minutes. According to Heathrow Airport, she landed 103 minutes earlier than planned. Two machines from the airline Virgin Atlantic covered the distance in four hours and 57 minutes and four hours and 59 minutes, respectively. The previous record for a passenger flight in a normal aircraft was five hours and 13 minutes, set by a Boeing Dreamliner of the low-cost airline Norwegian in 2018.
“For us, safety is more important than speed records, but our highly trained pilots used the weather conditions to get passengers to London much earlier than planned,” said British Airways.
Concorde managed a record time
In 1996 the Concorde supersonic passenger aircraft made the shortest flight across the Atlantic. The machine covered the distance from London to New York in two hours and 52 minutes. After the crash of a Concorde in July 2000, flight operations with these aircraft ceased in 2003.
