“There was a resurgence of life with the US elections on Monday and Tuesday, but at the end of the day, the economic outlook got the better of it and the North American indexes lost between 4% and 5% on the week. This suggests that the recovery that began at the end of October is not sustainable, ”analyzes Charles Huot, managing director, institutional equities at BMO Capital Markets.

The latter adds that the US employment data for October came as no surprise, since a few days ago, an ADP study had suggested that the figures were going to be worse than expected: “However, the more important comes from the revised data for September. The US lost 284,000 jobs during the month, far more than the 159,000 reported a month ago, ”he said.

In October, the US recorded losses of 240,000 jobs, while analysts forecast a decline of 190,000. The unemployment rate climbed to 6.5%, the highest since March 1994.

Earlier today, after a chaotic start, Asian financial centers managed to rebound slightly as investors remain pessimistic about the global economic crisis and uncertainties about the decisions that new US President-elect Barack Obama will take.
