New York to allow electric scooters and bikes, banned since 2004

Update (03/04/2020) : Scooters and electric bikes are about to be allowed in New York. In an article published on April 3, 2020, Engadget reveals that the preliminary budget agreement of this American state includes a whole part on the abolition of this ban, in force since 2004. Note all the same that each municipality will be able to specify the legislation. Manhattan may, for example, ban self-service transportation equipment services such as Lime or Bird.

Article original : Electric scooters and bicycles are not ready to roam New York avenues. On December 27, 2019, Andrew Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York, vetoed the bill put on the table in June 2019. This text provided for the authorization of these two means of transport, banned in the state since 2004.

The politician invokes the lack of sufficient security measures. For example, the text did not oblige the wearing of helmets or impose speed limits. Andrew Cuomo mentions in particular the death of Nelson Miranda Gomez, a 16-year-old young man hit by a truck while driving a Lime self-service scooter, at the end of November 2019.

Constantly repressed delivery men

The bill was passed in June 2019 almost unanimously. This stage was particularly welcomed by the delivery men who mostly use electric bicycles to carry out their missions. They then urged the state to change its legislation to no longer be in violation and punished by the local police.

New York criminalizes delivery men who are just trying to make a living and slaps them with thousands of dollars in fines, ruining their ability to support themselves and their families“, reacted to the new Jessica Ramos, elected Democrat at the initiative of the bill. New York elected officials should soon try their luck again by proposing a new version which will focus more on security, in the hope of seeing Andrew Cuomo l ‘approve this time.
