According to a report, Russia is bringing in tens of thousands of troops, including North Koreans, to launch a major offensive in Kursk. Ukrainian officials are planning an attack “in the coming days.” At the same time, Russian President Putin is implementing an appropriate agreement.
Russia appears to have assembled 50,000 troops for a frontline in the Kursk region. Among them are North Korean soldiers, according to a report in the New York Times. citing US and Ukrainian officials. The latter are planning an attack “in the coming days.” Russia wants to take back territory in the region that was taken from Ukraine.
According to a new assessment from the US, Russia has increased troops without withdrawing troops from eastern Ukraine – its most important battleground – which allows Moscow to act on several faces at once. Russian troops had already recaptured small parts of the territory captured from Ukraine in Kursk, but had not yet launched a major offensive.
A bilateral agreement was reached
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has implemented the defense agreement with North Korea that was agreed in June. The Kremlin published the law confirming the agreement signed by the president on its website over the weekend. The Russian parliament had previously approved the aid agreement.
Putin signed the agreement in June when he visited Pyongyang with North Korean leader Kim Kong Un. It came after months of deepening security cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
The agreement states that both countries will provide “immediate military assistance” if one of them is attacked. He also calls on Moscow and Pyongyang to cooperate to oppose Western sanctions and coordinate their position at the United Nations.
Thousands of North Korean soldiers
North Korea has become one of the main supporters of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. The West has long accused the internationally isolated country of supplying Moscow with weapons for use in Ukraine. According to the US government and Ukraine, North Korea has also sent more than 10,000 of its troops to the Russian border region of Kursk in recent weeks to support the Russian army in the fight front of the Ukrainian army.
The New York Times writes that troops from North Korea are currently in the western part of the Kursk region together with Russian troops. According to US defense officials, it is currently unclear whether the North Korean leadership will agree to continued operations with its troops in Ukraine – or simply participate in the counter-offensive in Kursk. Some officials believe that if their operation in Kursk is successful, North Korean troops could advance to the Ukrainian border, from where only Russian troops would enter Ukraine.
Russia has been making slow but steady advances in Ukraine for months. By attacking Kursk, Ukraine hoped to force the Russians to move their forces. According to experts, this has not really been successful. Nevertheless, last October seems to be the worst month for Russians so far. According to British estimates, the country has not suffered such high losses in any month since it invaded Ukraine. On the BBC, the British Defense Minister, Tony Radakin, spoke about 1,500 people who were killed and wounded every day. This means that the loss of Moscow personnel from February 2022 has been around 700,000 soldiers. The information can hardly be verified. Neither Russia nor Ukraine report their own number of victims.
