New York Times: Putin wins diplomatic victory

The New York Times believes that the opening BRICS meeting in Kazan is positive for Putin. The newspaper writes on Tuesday: “Russian President Vladimir V. Putin, isolated from the West because of his war in Ukraine, scored a diplomatic victory on Tuesday when he welcomed the leaders of China, India and South Africa to the opening of a summit of economies which was emerging with a focus on him. .. “Try to reorganize the world order currently controlled by the US.”

Putin was able to roll out the red carpet for world leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Xi’s plane was escorted by a Russian fighter jet before landing in Kazan, where a red carpet was rolled out for him. This included a guard of honor and women in traditional dress (…). Putin received heads of state and government in the historic Kazan Kremlin, a centuries-old ornate castle.”

The newspaper continues: “According to the state news agency RIA, the summit may be the most important international event in Russia since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 or even in Russian history. During the three days, Putin will also receive the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the first member of NATO to express interest in joining the group of countries, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres .”
