They are generally known: the tourist highlights or must-dos in New York. The editors of Voyago look beyond the view from the Empire State, the flickering screens of Times Square or the standard Hop-On-Hop-Off bus ride. An ‘alternative’ bucket list, with New York three times different.
1. The Cloisters
The walls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in New York City are home to one of the largest art collections in the world. A visit to this museum is therefore on the wish list of many. However, few know that The Cloisters, located in the northern tip of Manhattan, is also part of The MET’s collection. The museum consists of parts of five different French monasteries, which display thousands of European works of art. One of the highlights is the Medieval Gardens that surround The Cloisters.
2. Sunday Flea Market in DUMBO
Until November 27, the DUMBO District in Brooklyn still hosts the Sunday Flea Market every Sunday. A cozy flea market, with about 75 stalls selling vintage clothing and furniture, handmade jewelry and carpets, collectors items and food stands. In short: from classic Polaroid cameras and discolored Toy Story dolls, to old records and vintage denim jackets. The perfect spot for finding unique items, because one thing is certain: everything hanging, standing or lying there is one of a kind. Allow some time for it, because everything is close together and mixed up.
3. Roosevelt Island Tram
Step onto the floating Roosevelt Tram, which also served as the backdrop in the Spiderman (2002) film. The cable car runs over the East River and gives a spectacular view of the Upper East Side and the island itself. You can board at 2nd avenue and 60th Street.
