The outlook for cinemas and the film industry in general has improved significantly. New York, one of the world’s largest film markets, will finally allow cinemas to reopen next month. This means that the box office, which has suffered enormously since March 2020, could finally get a much needed boost. It also means that upcoming blockbusters have a much better chance of meeting their current release dates.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement on Monday. Movie theaters will be allowed to reopen on March 5. They will, however, be subject to strict restrictions, in terms of capacity and regulations to help keep moviegoers safe. It comes as the city’s theaters have been closed for just under a year. Here’s what Cuomo had to say.
“New York theaters will be aligned with the rest of the state: 25% capacity; no more than 50 people per screening; masks; allocated seats; social distance; staff responsible for controlling occupancy, traffic and seating to ensure compliance. They need the improved filtration, ventilation and air purification standards specified by the DOH. ”
Many of the delays that major releases saw in theaters last year in Los Angeles and New York were not open. These represent the two biggest markets in the United States at the box office. Without them, the films are unlikely to succeed. Taking into account the results for titles such as Principe and Wonder Woman 1984, this logic checks. The National Association of Theater Owners welcomed the state’s decision. NATO had this to say about the news in a statement.
“Theater owners are pleased with the announcement of the safe reopening of New York City theaters. Stringent voluntary health and safety protocols have allowed theaters across the country to operate safely and responsibly at higher capacity limits for many months. without a single epidemic … being traced in cinemas. ”
The year 2021 has been largely absent from major releases, or box office hits, due to lingering health and safety concerns. However, things are showing signs of improvement. As such, it is possible that movies like Black Widow, F9 and Guy gratuit, which are all expected to arrive in May, will not be further delayed. Several other blockbusters such as No time to die, Morbius and Ghostbusters: the afterlife were recently again delayed for several months.
In 2019, domestic box office revenue totaled $ 11.3 billion. That number fell in 2020 to just over $ 2 billion, down more than 89% year over year. Hollywood has since embraced streaming as the future. Cinemas can hardly afford to delay reopening en masse if they hope to play a major role in the future of the industry. Warner Bros. releasing all of its movies on HBO Max and in theaters on the same day this year doesn’t help. But opening up New York for business, albeit in limited capacity, certainly does. This news has already been reported by CNBC.
