Sachin Hawkins, a teenage university student from New York, was stabbed to death in the United Kingdom and his “roommate” was arrested as a suspect.
Hawkins, a 19-year-old aspiring educator, was a resident of Freeport, Long Island (NY) until last year, when he moved to study at Hull University, a public campus located on the outskirts of Yorkshire, England.
Syed Hussain-Kazi, 24, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of homicide, a day after the crime. Police said that after the attack had fled the residence they shared and was captured after an extensive search.
“He was a special child, he had a lot of love in his heart,” said his mother, quoted by NBC News. He added that his son I wanted to be a special education teacher.
Hawkins’ mother added that the suspect and the victim were friends and that she had spoken to her roommate on the phone days before her son’s death. “I am totally confused. I haven’t reached the anger phase. I just wonder: why? What happened?… What triggered it? That’s the question we all ask ourselves. Why Sachin? None of his friends, his other friends, who were there, no one knows.”
“It is thought that it is an isolated incident between two people, who are believed to have known each other, which took place within a property,” Chief Inspector Jayne Goodens said in a statement. “We do not believe there is any major risk to the public.”
The family is seeking funds to bring Hawkins’ body to Freeport and cremate it under Hindu rituals.
His mother said UK police and his community on Long Island have shown great support. “We have had a lot of support from neighbors, from family. From people she didn’t even know,” the woman said.
