New York suspends classes and vaccinations due to the arrival of a big snowfall

New York, Jan 31 (EFE) .- The city of New York decided this Sunday that tomorrow, Monday, it will suspend classes and the vaccination campaign against covid-19 because a strong storm is expected that could leave up to 45 centimeters of snow .

The mayor of the city, Bill de Blasio, announced that all appointments to be vaccinated against covid-19, whose post-vacation wave is beginning to give the city a break, will be postponed until further notice.

“The last thing we want is for our older people to go out in the middle of a storm like this,” said the councilor.

Also, colleges will close in America’s largest school system for at least Monday.

State and city authorities have asked all residents of New York and its surroundings not to go outside or drive if not necessary, as heavy snowfall is expected since Sunday afternoon.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) forecasts that the storm, one of the strongest this winter, will hit New York with strong winds and with the possibility of leaving about half a meter of snow.

The storm has already left heavy snowfall, winds and arctic temperatures in Chicago and Washington DC, but its strength is expected to be felt especially in New York.

New York has mobilized some 2,000 snowplows to receive what is possibly the biggest snowstorm to hit New York since 2016. EFE
