New York subway unsafe? Another Man Stabbed – NBC New York (47)

A 26-year-old man was stabbed in the Manhattan subway during an argument with another passenger Wednesday night, authorities say, marking the latest incident of escalating violence on New York City’s transportation system.

And it is that violence in the New York subway is on the rise, as five people have died in the transit system in recent weeks.

According to police, the victim had some sort of dispute with the assailant on a 2 northbound train at 72nd Street and Upper West Side Broadway Station just after 11pm and the situation turned violent.

The attacker pulled out a knife and stabbed the 26-year-old in the leg and index finger, at which point a friend of the victim did not stand by and sprayed the suspect, who fled the train, according to authorities.

The victim was transported to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Anyone with information on this incident can call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their suggestions by logging in on the Crime Stoppers website one, or one Twitter @NYPDTips.

RECENT ATTACKS ON THE NEW YORK UNDERGROUND

Meanwhile, the NYPD has a series of open investigations into recent subway crimes.

Earlier this week, a 48-year-old man from Queens died after falling on the tracks in Jackson Heights amid an argument over a dropped cellphone with another boy, authorities said. A 50-year-old man arrested.

That death marked the ninth in the subway network in 2022 and the fifth in the past two weeks.

On Friday, a teenager was shot dead on a moving train in Far Rockaway. Three people have died since September 30 from stabbings, two in subway attacks and a third on a city bus.

Just over the weekend, a man was pushed onto the tracks of a Bronx subway station in what police call an unprovoked attack. The video released the next day showed the moment when the unidentified assailant approached the man and pushed him onto the road just before a train 6 arrived. That man survived thanks to the Good Samaritans.

The MTA recently asked New York police officers to stand in the center of a platform in an attempt to reassure passengers about the safety of the transit system. As for the death earlier this week, authorities say it could have been prevented.

“The cell phone fell into a pit. My God, please cut things down. We can take your phones, your belongings, we always do,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey.
