New York Subway Pass Prices Rise

The New York transport authority has a funny way of celebrating Easter… The MTA has indeed just applied a new increase in the MetroCard, the transport card valid for the New York subway and buses.

New rates for unlimited MetroCard cards

Here are the new rates applied since Sunday April 21, 2019 for the two unlimited MetroCard cards:

  • The 7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard, the metro and bus card valid for an unlimited period for 7 days, goes from $ 32 to $ 33. To this is added $ 1 for the price of the card. This card is the card most used by tourists since it allows you to use New York subways and buses at will for 7 days.
  • The 30-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard, valid for 30 days, jumped from $ 121 to $ 127. Plus $ 1 for the price of the card.

Changes in the price of single trips

If you prefer to pay for your journeys individually, for example in addition to an unlimited 7-day MetroCard, know that there is good and bad news for the system. Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard.

  • The good news : the fare does not increase and remains at $ 2.75 per trip.
  • The bad news: the New York transport authority is ending the 5% bonus that previously applied when you put money on your card. One way to indirectly increase the price of the ticket …

Good to know : the Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard and the Unlimited Ride MetroCard are one and the same card. It is simply up to you to decide, when you buy your MetroCard, if you want to opt for the unlimited 7-day plan or if you want to charge a sum which will be debited for each trip. This is easily done at terminals in metro stations, in French! Note that you can do both: opt for the Unlimited package and charge money for the end of your stay, for example.
