The New York subway takes action against ticket evaders with AI-supported surveillance software. The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has installed the technology at seven undisclosed stations to track ticketless passengers.
With an estimated $285 million in lost revenue from illegal driving in 2022, the MTA will expand the system to approximately 24 more stations by the end of the year. Spanish AI developer AWAAIT created the software that tracks ticketless passengers and sends images of them to nearby station staff.
The AI system doesn’t report ticket fraud to law enforcement, but it’s unclear if that will change in the future. The MTA says the system is used “primarily as a counter” to assess ticket evasion methods and peak times. The number of police officers in New York City subway stations has recently increased, leading to more arrests of ticket evaders, “with a disproportionate impact on black and Hispanic passengers,” reports The Verge.
