New York halted use of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine statewide after federal health officials today raised concerns about a possible link to blood clots, the state health commissioner announced this morning.
Governor Andrew Cuomo reported people with appointments for that vaccine do not cancel them, as Pfizer will be offered instead, which requires two applications several days apart.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended early this morning that the United States temporarily halt use of Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine after six cases reported in the country of a “rare and serious” type of blood clot in women.
“The state of New York will follow CDC and FDA recommendation and will stop the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine throughout the state immediately today as these health and safety agencies evaluate the next steps, ”reacted Regional Health Commissioner Howard Zucker in a statement.
He added that the state will continue to seek guidance from the federal government and “will update New Yorkers as more information becomes available.”
NYC City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who received the J&J dose along with his health commissioner, Dr. Dave Chokshi, stated that “We both believe in the effectiveness of this vaccine. [Pero] All appointments that would have been for a Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been postponed. They will be rescheduled, “he said, quoted by New York Post.
