New York State Tops 1,000 Coronavirus Deaths

NY – The death toll from the coronavirus in New York state it topped 1,000 on Sunday, less than a month after the first case was detected there.

By nightfall, New York City reported its death toll had risen to 776. The total death toll statewide is expected to be released Monday, but Sunday morning had already been recorded at least 250 deaths outside the city, so the number of fatalities in the state reached at least 1,026.

New data shows the city’s districts that have been hit hardest by the disease and that about a quarter of the people who have died from the coronavirus in the state lived in nursing homes.

These are the novelties of the coronavirus in New York:

Strong blow to poor neighborhoods

The coronavirus is overwhelming some of New York City’s poorest neighborhoods, according to information released by city authorities.

In Queens, 32% of the more than 30,000 confirmed cases in the city are recorded as of Saturday, the highest number for any district.

Neighborhoods like Jackson Heights, Elmhurst and Corona, which are generally poor, densely populated and have large non-English speaking populations, have been among the hardest hit, according to a city map showing the percentage of people who tested positive for COVID-19 disease. In these areas, between 69 and 86% of tests have tested positive.

A hospital in Elmhurst has been overwhelmed by cases of coronavirus. Last week, in a single day, 13 patients died from COVID-19.

Some encouraging numbers

The number of patients who have been discharged from state hospitals after receiving treatment for the coronavirus has been increasing every day to 845 patients on Saturday, the highest in one day, said Governor Andrew Cuomo. In total more than 3,500 people have been discharged.

As of Sunday, 8,500 patients remain hospitalized in New York State, including 2,000 in intensive care.

These numbers continue to rise, but Cuomo indicated that they are not multiplying as fast as last week. Between March 16 and 19, the number of hospitalizations in the state doubled every other day. Now it’s doubling roughly every six.

Warnings not to travel

After evaluating the possibility of a mandatory quarantine in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, President Donald Trump tweeted on Saturday that he would instead issue a warning asking people in these states to avoid any nonessential travel in the next two weeks.

New York Mayor Bill De Blasio said he was concerned about the impact of the alert on people with family members in New York and elsewhere and seeking to reunite.

Supplies shortage

De Blasio reiterated on Sunday his fear that if reinforcements do not arrive, the city will run out of masks, gowns and other hospital supplies in a week and respirators even earlier.

Cuomo said Sunday that more than 76,000 doctors, nurses and other health professionals, including some who were already retired, have volunteered to help fight the coronavirus.

Deaths in nursing homes

As of Friday, 24% of New York state coronavirus deaths occurred in people living in nursing homes, according to figures the state Department of Health gave to The Associated Press.
